When the first snow falls — usually around mid-November, sometimes earlier, sometimes later, depending on what the wind is plotting up on the Zirbitzkogel — Sankt Lambrecht becomes a story that can only be told quietly. The sounds are muffled, the houses seem to breathe more deeply, and in the late afternoon, when the lights come on, the valley begins to glow like a lantern held in a great, white hand.
Welcome to your warm alpine cabin near the idyllic village. Outside, snowflakes dance softly; inside, candlelight crackles and offers a quiet sense of coziness. The snow-covered mountains wrap you in stillness, as if time itself were pausing for a moment. Here you find good company, warmth, and moments the heart never forgets.
From the living room window of one of the chalets to the GrebenzenHöhen ski slope is perhaps eighty steps — fewer, if you are wearing ski boots and have a hunger for Kaiserschmarrn.
The Benedictine abbey was founded in 1076 by Markward of Eppenstein — sixteen years before the First Crusade, four hundred years before Columbus, and around the same time the Bavarians officially began to regard beer as delicious food. Since then, the ringing of its bells has scarcely fallen silent for an hour.
In winter, when snow covers the rooftops and the red onion-domed towers rise into the evening sky like two sentinels, you understand why the monks chose this place. Those who step into the cloister are given, through the ancient windows, a quality of light that has been lost elsewhere: amber, heavy, almost a part of the air itself.
The abbey library holds more than fifty thousand volumes, among them manuscripts from the twelfth century. Guided visits are possible all year round; in the Marmorsaal — one of the most beautiful rooms in Styria — concerts are held regularly between Advent and Easter.
When a choir begins to sing, the hall itself seems to draw a deep breath. The seventeenth-century stucco ceiling returns the voices gently, and for a moment one forgets that it is still snowing outside.
The GrebenzenHöhen ski area at the edge of the village offers more than 20 kilometres of pistes and routes, most of them within sight of the abbey tower — a detail you only learn to appreciate when you pause on the slope and remember where you actually are. The highest point lies at 1,870 metres, the runs wind through open larch forest, and in quiet hours, when the lifts happen to be empty, you can hear the bells ringing down in the valley.
For something quieter, walk the Lärchenpfad with snowshoes — three kilometres through a grove that, especially in late January when the frost weighs heavy on the branches, invites a kind of slow reverence. No music, no signs, no markers. Only the path, the trees, and the tracks of the one hare who is always half an hour ahead of you.
Sometimes, on a clear January evening, when the last skiers are already down in the valley, you can see the lights of the abbey church from the mountain station — as if someone had set a candle in the snow.
In summer the valley opens like an unfolding hand. The alpine pastures turn deep green — a green no palette can truly describe, because it shifts subtly hour by hour, depending on where the sun happens to be standing. The larches glow, the meadows smell of hay and lavender, and on the slope above the abbey the old concert of cowbells begins every morning.
On the cycle paths that loop around the abbey — the Murradweg R2 passes right through the village — you meet more mountain bikers than cars. And in the abbey courtyards, chamber concerts take place beneath linden trees older than the province of Styria itself. A programme is posted, yes; but no one will look at you sternly if you simply wander in and take a seat on a bench.
The Stiftsgarten — recently restored to its historical design — is in July a concert in a different key: roses, lavender, sage, and at its centre the garden house with its curved shingled dome, looking as if it had stepped out of an old engraving.
Sankt Lambrecht lies within the Naturpark Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen — one of the quietest protected areas in Styria, eight hundred and fifty square kilometres of forest, alpine pasture, and high moor. On the pastures, cattle graze whose horns stand so far apart you could almost lodge between them for the summer. They lift their heads as you pass, look briefly, and keep on chewing — as if we hikers were only a slightly oddly shaped part of the landscape.
The Auerlingsee, nestled between larch and spruce, holds its water so clear that the mountains appear sharper on its surface than on the actual slopes. Anyone looking for paths will find them here in two directions: upward, to the alpine huts, or inward, to one's own thoughts — which, in the end, often leads to the same place.
Each alpine pasture has its own sound. The animals wear bells of different sizes and pitches, so that from a distance the farmer already knows which herd is grazing where. On still summer afternoons, the Grebenzen sounds like an old, loose carillon that no one composed — and which, for that very reason, is so perfect.
In summer, life gathers around several places. The open-air pool below the old castle ruins — where the thirteenth-century walls have always watched the swimmers with the same benevolent patience that old walls tend to have. The fountain in the Stiftsgarten, where children plunge their hands into the cold water while hatching plans that last for exactly one summer afternoon. Hiking paths up to the Maria Schönanger pilgrimage church at the forest edge, a small yellow building with a golden orb on its tower, an hour's climb away, where you can, if you wish, enjoy a beer or two. And the Dreiwiesenhütte, where the Kaiserschmarrn portions are so large that they would deserve their own postal code.
Those who come here return not richer — but quieter.
